THE HISTORY OF THE DALLAS BENEFIT
Over the last thirteen years, the Dallas Benefit has grown into the single largest fundraiser for Limbs for Life, bringing in more than $2 million for amputees in need. But this event had humble beginnings. Developed by Doug Brooks, then President and COO of Brinker International, along with his wife, Holly Brooks and friend, Cynthia H. Beaird, the Dallas Benefit sought to raise money and awareness for our foundation. The first event was held in the small banquet room of a Mexican restaurant in Dallas in 2001 and raised a modest $75,000. For the next twelve years, Doug and Holly worked hard to grow the Dallas Benefit and build up the mission of Limbs for Life.
The 2002 benefit was moved to the Granada Theatre and, in addition to a cocktail reception, buffet dinner, program and live auction, attendees were treated to live music and dancing. A costume component was added in 2003 to further engage attendees and make the whole experience more entertaining. In 2004, the event was again moved, this time to Park Lane Ranch in “Big D,” where the auction brought in more than $250,000 for Limbs for Life. Donations and attendance increased over the next three years and forced Doug and Holly to relocate yet again. In 2007 the Dallas Trade Mart in the city’s central business district played host to the event and gave it a fresh, new vibe. While at the Trade Mart, attendance boomed and donations reached nearly $1 million during a four-year period. Following the 2011 Benefit, the event was moved to the fabulous Intercontinental Hotel, where it remained for its final two years.
The last Dallas Benefit was held in 2013. During the event’s 13 year run, Doug and Holly, along with countless volunteers, supporters and attendees, not only raised money but also awareness for limb loss and the struggles of amputees in need. Their contributions allowed over 1,000 amputees from across the country to walk again! Limbs for Life is incredibly grateful to Doug and Holly Brooks for their unwavering dedication and look forward to many more years of their leadership as members of our Executive Board.
