In 2013, Limbs for Life joined forces with the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center for their annual Welcome Home Celebration for Oklahoma troops returning from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The resulting BLAZE 5k not only raised funds for amputees, but also commemorated the hard work and sacrifice of our service men and women.

We would like to thank Hanger Clinic for their generous support of this event.

Limbs for Life is an Oklahoma City-based nonprofit that helps amputees obtain the prosthetics they need to lead normal lives.

The Oklahoma City VA Medical Center provides health care to more than 225,000 veterans in 48 Oklahoma counties.

This year the two organizations are combining efforts; Limbs for Life’s 5k Blaze race will share a date with the VA’s Welcome Home Celebration, bringing together service members, veterans, their families and military and nonmilitary amputees.

“Joining forces with the VA Medical Center helps unite the community of amputees from both our groups, encouraging each person to share stories and words of support”, Lucy Fraser Limbs for Life’s executive director, said in a news release. “The circumstances surrounding an amputation may vary significantly…(but) knowing very powerful for another’s success in healing.”

The events will be Aug. 24 at the Chesapeake Boathouse, 725 S Lincoln Blvd. The public is welcome to participate. Proceeds from the Blaze 5k race and a one-mile fun run will benefit Limbs for Life.

Awards will be given to the fastest three men and women, as well as to the fastest man and woman in each age category.

The race is officially timed and sanctioned. The Welcome Home Celebration will include informational booths, family-friendly activities, music, refreshments and more. Race day registration begins at 6:45 am., followed by the celebration from 7 to 10 a.m. (including an opening ceremony at 7:45 a.m.).

The race begins at 8 a.m. Register for the race online at www.limbsforlife.org or by phone at 605-5462.

Advance registration is $25; race day registration is $30. Discounts are available for military members and groups.

The first 1,000 to register will receive a free commemorative T-shirt.
